Keeping Families Together (KFT) is an evidence-based model of permanent, supportive housing for child welfare involved families struggling with homelessness and other challenges. Tonya Brown entered KFT in 2018 and received assistance in selecting and maintaining housing, as well as clinical and case management services designed to empower families to stay together, remain in their homes and make strong connections in their community.
Since enrollment, Tonya has moved progressively towards independence, despite being a victim of domestic violence, family challenges and past traumas. She moved into a new home, obtained her GED, and plans to enroll in a sleep study technician program at Thomas Edison University.
Working with her KFT team, including her Clinician and Substance Abuse Counselor, Tonya has improved her parenting skills and her relationship with her children, is experiencing fewer symptoms of depression and anxiety, and has abstained from drug use. Tonya continues to work to improve her circumstances by working with her KFT team to set additional goals and objectives to help her and her family successfully transition to independence.
Keeping Families Together (KFT) is funded by the NJ Department of Children and Families. Last year Catholic Charities, Diocese of Metuchen worked collaboratively with families, community housing partners and the Department of Community Affairs to provide more than 16,000 hours of service and to successfully house 100 families.
