Sara struggled behaviorally and academically in school, exhibiting tantrums, defiance and physical aggression; she was referred to the Catholic Charities Connections Mentoring program in July, 2014. Sara, who was painfully shy, was matched in August, 2014 with Frances, a mentor who volunteered for the Connections program. The program made several referrals of community resources to Sara’s mother to help stabilize her family situation.
During the last year and half, Sara and Frances shared meals and engaged in weekly activities designed to help Sara with her social phobia. With Frances’ support, Sara joined a summer theater camp and participated in three shows, earning an award for the most improved camper. Though still quiet, Sara has made great strides with her shyness. She has developed a trusting friendship with her mentor, keeps her head up, and engages in conversation. At Christmas time, Frances received a text message from Sara’s sister. It read, “I appreciate you for making our family stronger, especially Sara. We’re getting closer and I know that is because of your help.”
Sara’s story illustrates the significant difference volunteers make every day in the lives of others. During April, National Volunteer Month, Catholic Charities, Diocese of Metuchen will recognize the valuable work of their volunteers through planned program activities, luncheons, and other forms of appreciation. “We know we cannot repay our volunteers for their valuable contributions, and we are indebted to their selfless service,” said Catholic Charities Former Executive Director, Marianne Majewski. “Non-profit agencies like ours depend upon volunteers to extend our services. Last year, with the help of 656 volunteers, Catholic Charities, Diocese of Metuchen served 53,000 people in Middlesex, Somerset, Hunterdon and Warren Counties.“
