On March 26, 2021, Catholic Charities Diocese of Metuchen child care programs in Somerset, Warren and Morris Counties will join communities across the globe to celebrate the importance of social-emotional learning (SEL) on the second annual International SEL Day centered on Building Bonds, Reimagining Community.
“It is only natural for us to participate in celebrating the second annual international SEL day,” said Child Care Service Area Director Krista Glynn. “Afterschool programs are a place for children to participate in social emotional opportunities through hands on activities, healthy connections with peers, and gain the necessary life skills for the future. During this difficult time, afterschool programs have never been more crucial for children to have a place where they feel safe and supported in out of school time. We continue to build on our incorporation of SEL into everything we do in our programs. ” said Glynn.
To celebrate the day, activities will be highlighted that specifically address the social emotional needs of children’s development and build on the children’s self-awareness, decision making, and relationship skills. For example, children will have opportunities to participate in a “take what you need bulletin board”, create a “coping box”, set goals, and incorporate respect, kindness and empathy in their daily activities.
Overall, 1,438 children were enrolled in Catholic Charities child care programs in fiscal year 2020 including children enrolled in early learning centers, school age child care, and summer camp programs. Last year Catholic Charities served more than 56,000 people in the Diocese of Metuchen.
