The Mobile Family Success Center (MFSC) of Middlesex County, operated by Catholic Charities, Diocese of Metuchen, is a community-based, family centered program, utilizing neighborhood gathering places where any community resident can go for family support, information and services. The program currently focuses on bringing services to East Brunswick, Edison, North Brunswick, Piscataway and Sayreville, but events are open to all Middlesex County residents. MFSC welcomes volunteers as the generous contribution of time and talent enables the Center to offer a higher level of quality service to program participants.
One such volunteer is Carla Graifer. Since volunteering with Mobile Family Success Center in 2017, Carla has shared her passion and talent in both the culinary and visual arts hosting various events, workshops, and virtual platforms within the community. Carla actively participates on MFSC’s Parent Advisory Board which led her to become a Community Health Ambassador (CHA) through a New Jersey Resident Pediatric Advocacy Collaborative (NJPRAC) grant. Highlighting the importance of eating healthy and increasing family engagement, Carla’s efforts in reducing and preventing Adverse Childhood Experiences (ACEs) is visible through the variety of classes she offers in the community. She often utilizes art to address mental health and shares about the struggles & triumphs of each respective artist.
Although the COVID-19 pandemic put a halt on in-person programming, Carla continued her volunteerism by offering virtual classes through Zoom. In April 2021, Carla hosted a month long series of children’s virtual art classes and showcased their work through an art exhibition. When COVID-19 restrictions were eased during the summer, Carla hosted an in-person, four week paint series at the North Brunswick Senior Center. One senior noted, “Carla’s art classes are therapeutic, and it helps me bring out my inner artist.”
In addition to volunteering her time and talent to our program, Carla lends a hand during Mobile Family Success Center’s big events such as the Community Baby Shower, Father-Daughter Dance, and Thanksgiving Turkey Distribution. MFSC is truly grateful for the immeasurable support Carla provides to the program. More than 1,100 families participated in events hosted by MFSC last year. The Mobile Family Success Center is funded by the Middlesex County Department of Human Services and the NJ Department of Children and Families.
