The Warren Basic Material Needs program at the Catholic Charities Social Service Center in Phillipsburg has been blessed with an increase of monetary gifts during the COVID-19 crisis. “The generosity and concern of the community enables the program to enrich the lives of those we serve,” said Program Director Sister M. Michaelita. “These supplemental funds create the opportunity to provide additional basic needs assistance. Our vision is to continue to utilize our resourcefulness in the extension of services to those struggling to make ends meet.”
The Phillipsburg Social Service Center extended a Special Summer Invitation to children in Warren County for three consecutive weeks in July and August. Lunch packages were filled with provisions to prepare weekly meals plus snacks, toys, crafts and other surprises. Thirty youngsters participated, and staff reported positive feedback from parents. A grandmother who just returned home from the hospital due to a heart condition was very enthusiastic to obtain the contents of the grocery bags. She indicated that her grandchildren were delighted to make the peanut butter and jelly sandwiches and they enjoyed the games. A father arrived at our site to gladly accept the “extra treats” for his autistic son. A case manager reported his client’s daughter was thrilled and amazed to discover a pair of Bombas socks! A mother conveyed that we made her special needs son’s day because of the toys, especially the bubble sticks. She expressed he had a fun experience because of Catholic Charities.
Sister M. Michaelita reflects, “It was a pleasure to be able to sprinkle a little sunshine on the youth in the county during these unprecedented and stressful times.” The Catholic Charities Social Service Center in Phillipsburg responded to more than 19,000 requests for food and clothing last year and remained open throughout the pandemic.
