The Guatemala Scholarship Program was started by young people from the Diocese of Metuchen’s youth ministry, led then by Deacon Mike Wojcik and his wife, Mary Ann, following a trip to Guatemala in July 2008. As follow-up to their trip, the youth representatives shared stories of their experiences at various parishes in the Diocese and generous parishioners donated the seed money for the fund. As the program grew and the youth moved on in their own educational pursuits, the Catholic Charities Solidarity Team stepped in to keep the program going. The program began with 11 students and currently supports 120 students from 7 villages.
To date, this venture has been supported by parishes in the Diocese of Metuchen including St. Charles Borromeo in Skillman; Nativity of Our Lord in Monroe; St. Bernard of Clairvaux in Bridgewater; Queenship of Mary in Plainsboro; Immaculate Conception in Spotswood. In addition, students at St. Francis Cathedral School in Metuchen, Our Lady of Victories in Sayreville, and St. James School in Woodbridge have provided support.
Considering a donation today will make a difference in the lives of poor families in Guatemala. Parishes and individuals can offer full or partial sponsorships. Any amount is helpful and 100% of the funds received goes to Guatemala. Your contribution can make a difference!
